The Resume Specialist
Here are some ideas to help you win that job!
-
What color paper should I
print my resume on? In most instances, white, off-white, or
ivory. And be sure to use a fine premium paper.
-
Does my resume need to be
scannable?
To be safe, yes. For detailed information on how to ensure your resume is
scanner-friendly, check out these books: Job
Searching Online for Dummies by Pam Dixon, Cyberspace Resume Kit by
Mary B. Nemnich and Fred E. Jandt, and The Electronic Resume Revolution by
Joyce Lain Kennedy.
-
How do I prepare for a job
interview?
Before you start sending out your resume, be sure that
you’re primed to interview effectively. First, research the organization
you're interviewing with. Second, make sure you identify the most
commonly-asked interview questions. Third, prepare your responses. Fourth, role-play with a friend to be sure your answers are responsive and complete. Try these
five great books to help you prepare
for that all-important interview: Boost Your Interview IQ by Carole
Martin, Interview Express by Tom Jackson, Job Interviews for
Dummies by Joyce Lain Kennedy, 100+ Winning Answers to the Toughest
Interview Questions by Casey Hawley, and The 101 Toughest Interview Questions by Daniel Porot.
-
Do I need to send a thank you letter after a job
interview?
Yes. If you’re not already doing
this, you’re missing an opportunity to show your prospect that you’re a
professional, polite person, one who understands the protocols of today’s
job search process. Keep your letter short and sweet. Thank your prospect
for interviewing you, include a brief reminder of your strengths, and tell
him or her that you want the job (if you do).
- Does my resume have to be laser-printed?
Yes. Don't use a printer that produces fuzzy-edged print.
